Quinta do Lago South course was designed by WILLIAM MITCHELL and opened in 1974. It has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times, together with many large professional and amateur championships.

The favourite of many tour players, this course offers the possibility to hit the greens in regulation in several ways. However, each hole has one easy route and the player who sees this, and has the skill to follow the designer’s intention, and produce sub-par figures. An anti-clockwise loop, it favours the draw shot.

This course favours the long hitter, but requires the player to pick a particular route to score well. Although both anti-clockwise loops, the first nine favours a draw, while the second favours a fade from the tee. Holes 3, 15 and 17 feature lakes, which must be negotiated.

Holes 8, 10, 15 and 18 are the most testing for the scratch player while holes 2, 3, 5, 12, 13 and 17 offer the best possibilities of birdies. An enjoyable experience for players of all standards.

The first tee isn't too difficult, there is some leeway from the generous fairway and the approach to the large green of this par 4 has no intrusive hazards, a couple of bunkers or so. Along par 5 follows. The third is a par 4 of 387 meters and flows over a rise in the fairway, frustratingly masking the finger of water coming in on the left in front of the green. If your second shot is in any way wanting, you will have a pretty good idea where the ball will be! A firm, confident approach to the elevated green is needed.

The hugely elevated tee at the par 4 ninth somehow encourages a forced drive, which will find trouble on the left and right. This hole dog-legs left and a longish, straight drive is rewarded with sight of the green. The fairway dips away off the tee, and then climbs again, so the approach is invariably an uphill lie. Your best shot is to the right side of the green. Probably the most memorable hole here is the 200 meter par 3 fifteenth, with a large lake which you have to carry. The green is set in a semicircle of umbrella pines and you get to it across a distinctive wooden bridge.

The two 18 holes courses at Quinta do Lago offer different challenges. The terrain is similar on both courses, based on sandy Algarvean soil covered with pine trees, heather, broom and many beautiful wild flowers. The terrain is gently undulating and several lakes feature in the play of each course. The bunkering is superb. The layouts provide a test for players of all ability levels – the sign of great golf courses
