The North course terrain is superb and typical of the area, sandy and littered with umbrella pine trees. In the spring, the rough is covered with a blanket of wild flowers, heather and gorse.

The bunkering is incomparable, both on the fairways and surrounding the greens and gives the course an advantage over many of similar quality and design.

Quinta do Lago north course has two architects. The American WILLIAM MITCHELL designed holes 1 to 5 and 15 to 18 in 1974. These holes (as with the other course) share a unique character. Holes 6 to 14 were designed by JOSEPH LEE with the collaboration of ROCKY ROQUEMORE, both from the USA, and opened in 1989.

This course has four great Par 5 holes requiring power and accuracy to play them well, also providing superb views. The Par 3 holes are all influenced by the wind, hole 14 is outstanding. The Par 4´s are all doglegs except for holes 10 and 13. Precision driving is vital to set up the chance of a low score. Lakes on holes 12 and 18 claim many victims. The course is an anti-clockwise loop and favours those who can draw the ball.

These holes have more cross falls on the fairways than the other layouts and all the Par 4 and 5 holes are doglegs, demanding precise tee shots, to set up straightforward approaches.

The first is a par 4 of 367 meters. The majestic pines impede a direct drive towards the green. The right side of the fairway sets up the ideal position. The green is ample and although it is protected by bunkers, you can get away with a running approach. The par 4 tenth has exotic gardens to its left imposing an "out of bounds" penalty off the elevated tee... not the time for one of those hooks. The fairway is cut by deep valleys in front of the tee and green. Driving towards an elevated plateau doesn't give you sight of a strategic bunker in front of the green. Anything short will, of course, be pretty sure to find it. This is a delightful hole and if you can end up weather par here, it's very satisfying.

The 12th is probably the most interesting. It is a severe, left-handed dog-leg the huge lake to the left and the distant bunkers encourage a long drive. The safest approach is to use a mid-iron to the fairway. Then you play over the lake. The green is generous and has a bank at the back. The finishing hole is a majestic par 5 of 480 meters. The drive, out over water to the landing area, opens up the dog-leg to the right. The second shot will usually reach the base of the hill. The green above you is Beverly stepped. Depending on the flag position, putting here can be a real nightmare. If you have landed beyond the pin, you are looking back downhill, possibly back off the green. If you are short, then there is a more than likely chance that the ball will rob back anyway.

All the famous male and female players who have experienced this course, including “Ryder Cup” and “Curtis Cup” team members, have been euphoric in their praise for this course, which will soon take its place among the great European layouts.

The two 18 holes courses at Quinta do Lago offer different challenges. The terrain is similar on both courses, based on sandy Algarvean soil covered with pine trees, heather, broom and many beautiful wild flowers. The terrain is gently undulating and several lakes feature in the play of each course. The bunkering is superb. The layouts provide a test for players of all ability levels – the sign of great golf courses.
