Pinheiros Altos golf course is a highly original and distinctive course, with three sets of nine holes that possess completely opposing characteristics. Pinheiros Altos borders the Natural Park of Ria Formosa which provides a habitat for many species of birds and has much interesting vegetation.

The Pinheiros Altos golf course was designed by the American Ronald Fream and later redeveloped by Peter McEvoy and Howard Swan. The latest nine holes have been expertly designed by the Portuguese golf course architect, Jorge Santana da Silva.

Since its inauguration in June 1992, the course has gained a reputation as the favourite pre-season practice ground for several of today's top professional golfers. They are drawn to the large practice ground which includes three putting-greens, areas for bunker, chip shots and several greens. There are also comprehensive programmes of tuition for golfers of all levels. Weekly programs with individual lessons include video analysis of golfers' swings.

While the first nine holes are over rolling sandy underground with gentle pine trees, the shorter second nine run through hills dotted with lakes that present the main obstacles for the golfers on this course.

The new holes integrate with the former first nine to create two par 36 nine holes. The former back nine will, for now, remain the same and complete the 27 holes.

The new holes incorporate four large lakes, three of which are connected by a rambling brook and on seven of the new 9 holes the golfer’s ball could find a watery grave! Add to this the ancient existing cork trees, the old nora, the picturesque views over the Ludo valley to the Goldra hills beyond and the several hundred strategically placed pine trees due to be planted this year and you have a golf course like the best female spies. Beautiful but dangerous!

The beauty of the design by today’s most talented Portuguese golf course architect, Jorge Santana da Silva is not only aesthetic but strategic. It is very much “risk and reward” and it will seem that on each hole the golfer is faced with the decision to play safe or attack.

Todays Pinheiros Altos course is a far cry from the course that opened in 1992. The 27 holes will continually offer enjoyment to all who play it with some pleasant surprises along the way.
