The Old course with its tree lined fairways is the Wentworth of the Algarve. Worth every euro of it's green fee. A joy to play!

The Old Course was designed by architect Frank Pennink and opened in 1969. It was completely remodelled in 1996 when several improvements were introduced and a new clubhouse built.

The Old course is renowned for the way the designer skilfully utilized the natural contours of the land, maintaining the native vegetation, consisting mainly of pinewoods. This is one of the courses in Portugal that will always stand out in the memory of visiting golfers.

This is the oldest of the Vilamoura courses that form part of a luxury resort development close to fantastic beaches. Course designer Frank Pennink wanted to create a course in the Algarve that would remind players of those beautiful, challenging inland British courses. He achieved that perfectly. Often described as the Grande Dame of Algarve courses, it meanders throughout impressive pine trees (the principal hazard) over gently undulating natural terrain. Although it opened in 1969, the course was completely renovated and modernised 27 years later although no major changes were made to the magnificent layout.

The verdant fairways of the course run through surrounding pine trees. This is a very attractive course with a great variety of holes. The Par 3 holes are all different and visually very beautiful, representing the toughest challenge on the course. They require careful selection of irons and near-perfect ball control. Over the rest of the course, trees play a decisive role, lining the doglegs and punishing any careless strokes. The greens are small, especially on the shorter holes, where there is simply no margin for error.

A unique feature of this course is that although its Par is 73, among its last nine holes there are no less than four with a Par 5. It was selected for the Portuguese Open in 1979, in which Bran Barnes was victor.

In addition to raising the Vilamoura Old Course to new heights of quality, an attractive new clubhouse and adjacent putting green were also built at that time. As with all Vilamoura courses, environmental protection practices are strictly adhered to by means of detailed management systems in line with guidelines established by ISO 14001 standards, Green Globe and Committed to Green programmes.
